We are pleased to announce our partnership with the Lions Club International for a Diabetes grant. The Loins Clubs of District 11E1 are offering qualified people with Diabetes a chance for a new lifestyle. They are partnering with Stehouwer Free Clinic to provide qualified people with the services they need such as diabetic retinopathy screenings, A1C screenings, and nutritional support groups.
Screenings for diabetes complications is an essential part of managing all types of diabetes. Diabetes management and training together can make a difference in decreasing complications of diabetes. Currently there are over 1,052,000 people in Michigan that suffer daily with diabetes and 77,000 are children. In Michigan alone diabetes costs an estimated $10.5 billion in annual medical costs.
Of the 415 million people worldwide living with diabetes, over 1/3 will develop some form of diabetic retinopathy. a complication of diabetes that can lead to vision impairment and blindness. More than 93 million adults or one in three currently living with diabetes have diabetic retinopathy.
